PRIVATE RESIDENCE – ABSTRACTION
IIDA Award of Merit
Inspired by its organic forms and the vivid lakefront sunsets, this lighting design unites the architecture with the spectacular views of the sky and water. The lighting acts in harmony with the dynamic geometry of this lakefront home, emphasizing the flowing curves and tall peaks to create a stunning composition. Throughout the house, layers of twilight blue have been blended with warm sunset hues to create this natural expression.
From the main entry, a strong sweeping progression, underlain with a driving beat of scalloped light, boldly carries the eye into the home, heralding what is to come. Flowing blue light from high efficient cold-cathode and hidden track with PAR38 pin spots are carefully woven around structural details to create a smooth form. This twilight blue is also juxtaposed with warm colored cold-cathode in the task oriented areas to provide a romantic warm-cool counterpoint, with obscure MR16 downlights adding drama and task illuminance. The composition of warm and cool light sweeps around the center core of the home, finally resting at a window view of the lake. This window is backlit from track-mounted pin spots, which are programmed to slowly change intensity and location to suggest a connection to the sky. Simple, yet harmonic pendants offer a focus for the warmth that flows onto the walls and ceiling in the adjacent dining space.
Blue light floats and elevates the rooms, while the planes and peaks are sculpted into a resonating composition from pin spots of white light. The lighting achieves a dramatic crescendo to accentuate the rhythm of nature, architecture and light.
